A Methodist, LOVE FEAST

A cartoon published in London on November 28, 1772, satirizes the Methodist love-feast, an emotional religious service begun in 1738 by John Wesley. The service featured singing and personal testimony by believers. In this cartoon "sister Rachell," with bellows in hand, prevents Brother Dwindle from entering the room, which is in disarray—the table knocked over and two dogs eating food off plates on the floor. Meanwhile, the Methodist priest with whom she has just had her own "love-feast" ("She sighs, he groans, she heavs her breast; / Each long to make each other Blest …"), hides under the table until he can "Depart in Peace the safest way."
