John Sherman

John Sherman, of Ohio, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1855 to 1861, is the subject of this half-length portrait included in McClees' Gallery of Photographic Portraits of the Senators, Representatives & Delegates of the Thirty-fifth Congress (1859). Beneath the image is a facsimile of Sherman's signature. A Republican politician and the brother of Union general William Tecumseh Sherman, he later served as a U.S. senator, as secretary of the treasury, and as secretary of state. As a senator he was the primary author of the Sherman Antitrust Act (1890).
