King George County “Colored” Ballot Box

This ballot box marked "Colored" was used to collect Black votes in the King George County election held on October 22, 1867. Black men had their votes counted for the first time in Virginia history that day. Army officers conducted the election and kept separate tallies of the Black and white votes. In King George County, and probably other counties, whites and Blacks used different ballot boxes.
