In an undated photograph, African American soldiers pose in Prussian-style uniforms. These men were probably members of the 2nd Battalion Colored Infantry, under Major William H. Johnson. During the Spanish-American War, Johnson led the 2nd Battalion in the all-black 6th Virginia Volunteers. This photograph is included in Johnson's collected papers, which reside at the Virginia State University Special Collections and Archives.
