6th Virginia Volunteers

A battalion in the 6th Virginia Volunteer Regiment stands at attention in 1898. The all-black infantry regiment was raised that year after the United States declared war against Spain over Cuban independence. The regiment, whose commander was white, did not take part in combat during the war, and the unit was mustered out of service on January 26, 1899.
