Confederate Flag Sewn by Constance Cary (Front)

This flag, sewn by Constance Cary at the outset of the American Civil War (1861–1865), is one of the first versions of the Confederate battle flag. Cary and her cousins Hetty and Jennie Cary each sewed a battle flag in the autumn of 1861 at the request of a Confederate congressional committee. The original is now held at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond.
