‘Weh Down Souf (Frontispiece)
The frontispiece of 'Weh Down Souf (1897), a collection of forty-two poems by D. Webster Davis, depicts a plantation mistress sitting next to an ill enslaved woman and reading the Bible to her. The scene comes from "Ol' Mistis," a dialect poem included in the volume.
