Danville Civil Rights Demonstrators

Thurman Echols Jr., a local high school student (at far right), and other civil rights demonstrators are led away by police on June 10, 1963, in Danville. Peaceful demonstrations, sit-ins, and marches organized by local civil rights leaders began in that city late in May to protest segregation and, when the protests continued, white authorities responded with tough legal stratagems and violence.
