Proclamation from Edmund Jenings

Governor's Council president Edmund Jenings issues a warrant for the arrest of four slaves in this signed proclamation from March 20, 1709. White colonial leaders were ever fearful of a slave uprising, and enslaved men and women were arrested at the first hint of trouble. According to the 1705 slave code, thirty lashes would be meted out to "any negro, mulatto, or Indian, bond or free" who should "at any time, lift his or her hand, in opposition against any Christian, not being negro, mulatto, or Indian."
