Louis Isaac Jaffé and Joseph Lenoir Chambers

Louis Isaac Jaffé (left) and Joseph Lenoir Chambers (right) in the offices of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, 1937. Chambers succeeded Jaffé as editor of the Virginian-Pilot upon Jaffé's death in 1950. Both editors won Pulitzer Prizes for their work in advancing progressive editorial agendas in the paper: Jaffé took a firm stand in favor of anti-lynching legislation, and Chambers took on Virginia's Massive Resistance movement during the school desegregation battles of the 1950's.
