James Branch Cabell and Ellen Glasgow With Friends

Virginia writer James Branch Cabell (center) is photographed in his home along with literary critic Burton Rascoe (far left); writer and editor Ellen Glasgow (near left); Rebecca Priscilla Bradley Shepherd Cabell, Cabell's first wife; and short story writer Elliot White Springs. Glasgow and Cabell, both successful Richmond writers and both active in 1920s-era Richmond artistic and social circles, chronicled their friendship and professional rivalry in several decades' worth of correspondence. This is the only known photograph of the two writers together.
