The Admission to the Ohio Bar, 1854.

John Mercer Langston, at center, is admitted to the bar in Ohio in 1854. Mercer later served as Virginia's first African American member of Congress (1890–1891). This illustration is included in Langston's autobiography, From the Virginia Plantation to the National Capitol (1894).
