Fry-Jefferson Map (Detail)
A detail from the Fry-Jefferson map of Virginia, drawn in 1751 shows the Bermuda Hundred settlement at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers. English colonist John Rolfe, who married Pocahontas, was one of the most famous residents of Bermuda Hundred. The town began to decline after 1780 when Richmond, seen at upper left along the James River, became the new capital of Virginia.
