Sir Walter Raleigh, Parting With His Wife
Sir Walter Raleigh, in chains in his prison cell, bids goodbye to his tearful wife in this 1846 engraving based on a painting by Emanuel G. Leutze. Raleigh’s books and a globe sit on a desk behind him. The English explorer and poet was beheaded in 1618; his wife, Bess, embalmed his head and kept it for the rest of her life.
