The Shipwreck That Saved Jamestown: The Sea Venture Castaways and the Fate of America
In this video, Lorri Glover, a professor of American history at Saint Louis University, delivers the first part of a lecture based on her book The Shipwreck That Saved Jamestown: The Sea Venture Castaways and the Fate of America at the Virginia Historical Society on April 16, 2009.
The wreck of the Sea Venture on Bermuda in 1609 and the role its survivors played in the eventual rescue of the failing colony at Jamestown are dramatic tales from the founding years of the nation. In the book she co-wrote with Daniel Blake Smith, Glover retells the story of the shipwreck and its aftermath. The authors make a forceful case that the Sea Venture bears no small part in the ultimate survival of English colonization in America.
The Virginia Historical Society and the Society of Colonial Wars in Virginia cosponsored the lecture. For the entire lecture, visit http://www.vahistorical.org/news/lectures_glover.htm
