Francis Howard, Baron of Effingham
Francis Howard, baron Howard of Effingham, and governor of Virginia from 1683 to 1692, is the subject of this 1877 portrait, part of the Commonwealth of Virginia's art collection. The artist, William Ludwell Sheppard, copied the painting from an earlier one made by artist Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723), the most important portraitist of his time in England, who served as official painter at the royal court.
