St. Luke Bank and Trust Company
A color postcard shows the substantial St. Luke Penny Savings Bank on the corner of First and Marshall streets in Richmond, Virginia, that was established in 1903 by Maggie Lena Walker. During the Great Depression, while other banks failed, Walker kept the St. Luke bank alive by merging it with two other banks to create the Consolidated Bank and Trust Company in 1929. The bank still exits in 2010 and is the oldest bank in the United States that has been continuously operated by African Americans.
