Farmville Students Protest School Closings

While Virginia's statewide policy of Massive Resistance ended in 1959, Prince Edward County's school board closed its public schools rather than desegregate. Using state tuition grants, whites established a segregated private school, while black students were denied any educational facility in the county. Not until 1964 did a U.S. Supreme Court ruling finally reopen the public schools in Prince Edward County.
